iPhone Commercials

I've been keeping an eye on the series of new iPhone Commercials because I like how they demonstrate what you can do with the Apple iPhone. But what I was noticing about the tv commercials instead is that the majority (so far all but one) are all geared toward men. I did finally see one that Apple calls 'The Winger' about a female ballet dancer who uses her iPhone to multi-task.

Now, I'm not saying that Apple is being sexist, but maybe they are unaware of how attached women get to their cell phones. We need more advertising for the Apple iPhone that is targeted toward us! I get that these commercials are all from real people who submitted stories about why they like their iPhones so much, but there had to be more than just one woman!

And all I am saying is that if Apple would pay attention, they would see how much women care about their phones. For example, a man will buy a plain old phone, the basic accessories, and the cheapest case he can find. Quite the opposite, a woman will go out of her way and pay more for a pink phone, accessorize the hell out of it with rhinestones and glitter, and then sport it like it's a pair of earrings.

Maybe I'm the only one who feels like this though. You can go one and watch them all yourself on the Apple iPhone website. Why don't you tell us what you think? Feel free to post a comment and let us know!

Unfortunately, you contradictory logic does not help to get your point across. You assert that Apple should have more ads featuring women. While you claim that you are not calling them sexist, all other textural evidence (and the "sexist" label you put on the post) says otherwise. Thus, your comment about men not being concerned with the style of their cell phones and cases instantaneously proves hypocritical. Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe men care how things look too? This blatantly ignorant generalization, I must say, is quite rude. You object to sexism and then immediately subject your readers to it.

Next, you say that Apple should pay attention. I personally found this comment ironic, considering that Apple is considered by a vast majority of people as having some of the most successful advertising campaigns in history(1)(2). I highly doubt that these campaigns simply pop into existence without extensive market research. I'd have to say that they are paying quite a great deal of attention. In fact, they are paying so much attention that recently, they chose to air an iPod Touch ad created by a YouTube user.

The evidence of my final point is illustrated clearly in your own writing. Throughout your blog post, you are implying either that Apple's marketing effort is not working or that it would be more successful if more women were included. However, you, in fact, are proving yourself wrong with your own actions. You used the term iPhone seven times in your post. That's seven more references for Apple that'll be indexed by Google. You are posting about the iPhone and giving it even more buzz simply because you saw their television advertisements. The proof, as the cliche goes, is in the pudding. Clearly, their advertising works.

If you have any desire to prove me wrong, I'd encourage you to contact Apple and ask them what percentage of people who submitted iPhone Success Stories were women. Also, go ahead and send in your story at http://www.apple.com/iphone/share/. It'll probably feel good to make a difference, eh?

I'd like to apologize if I've come off in a rude manner. Sincerely, I just wanted to clear the matter up and alert you to the inconsistencies and inaccuracies of the article. I appreciate what you're doing. Have a nice afternnon.

Jeff,
The reason for the "sexist" label is only because the subject of whether or not the commercials were in fact sexist was up for discussion. And no, I never really thought about the fact that men care about how things look, too...especially not their electronics. In my experience, they don't care. They like the latest and greatest, as far as technology goes, but the style of it doesn't seem to matter much. That's not me exhibiting sexism, it's merely an observation. You are welcome to a difference of opinion, however.

Do you work for Apple? Just asking because you seem to be awfully defensive about their advertising campaigns. I'm sure they do extensive market research, but I'm not the only person talking about the fact that out of all the new iPhone commercials, only one was a woman. I'm not saying their advertising is not working, in fact, I think the iPhone would be successful with NO advertising because it is an awesome device, I was just merely pointing out tha their advertising appears to be geared more towards men.
